According to the Fiscal 2009 Third Quarter Report filed by Apollo Group, Inc. yesterday, University of Phoenix just hit total enrollment of 420,700 — up 22% compared to last year. These numbers are well above, but reflective of strong overall growth in online education enrollment.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, by 2010, almost two-thirds of all projected job openings will require only on-the-job training. But that doesn’t mean you’ll automatically get hired if you don’t have a degree.
Those with a degree will most likely be ranked ahead of the non degree pack for employment. However, a hiring manager’s objective is to enlist the most qualified candidate at the lowest cost to the company, making those without a degree more desirable in some respects. At this point the cat isn’t only out of the bag, as it pertains to online degrees, it’s a full grown lioness on the prowl. Online degrees were once viewed as a gimmicky soiree into the world of higher education, but oh how things have changed.

Unfortunately your online degree will remain unaccredited. You would need to be enrolled and earn your degree after the school was officially accredited to earn that title, but you may still benefit from your schools new found accreditation.
While many prospective employers care about the accreditation title, they are less interested in when that accreditation date came to pass. The odds of you getting grilled for the precise date of your online degree vs. the accreditation date are slim to none. Besides, most believe if the school was on the path …

Most have no idea what GAAP stands for, though they should if they are interested in an online education. GAAP stands for Generally Accepted Accrediting Principles. This stamp of approval is very important as it serves to delineate between the haves and have-nots.
To offer recognized accreditation under GAAP, a school in the U.S. must receive accrediting by an accrediting agency recognized either by the U.S. Department of Education and/or by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. There are six regional accrediting agencies and numerous national accrediting bodies.
So not only do …

Unaccredited online degree programs can look very appealing. Generally speaking they provide a faster path to a degree than an accredited program, cost less, and provide greater flexibility. But what’s it worth?
The answer to that question varies greatly depending who you ask. However, large contingents of students who have enrolled in unaccredited programs have reported significant problems. Acceptance by employers and admission to other schools have been the biggest hurdles, and I can’t think of two bigger hurdles than that.
It is important to note that many of these unaccredited online …
