As an adjunct professor of Internet Marketing for the University of San Franscisco, I get to see about 35 students a month in my courses and read their feedback of their online degree experience. Many have positive experiences, and some have either neutral or negative experiences. Looking over the negative feedback, I’ve put together a short list of things that might help you get more out of your online degree experience.

This is a serious question. There have been lots of conversations lately, especially in fields like new media and social media, about whether academic credentials matter or not. Some people believe that they matter, that they demonstrate intellectual rigor and the ability to achieve a long term goal, while others believe that they’re largely valueless and don’t accurately portray what a person’s skills are.

Cheat cheat, never beat?
Online classes are perfect for working professionals and career beginners who want to complete or advance their education.  But are online students actually ”earning” their degree?  I’ve spoke to many undergrads who revealed to me how easy it would be to cheat on an exam, and countless others who openly admitted to cutting a few corners.
Online exams are usually timed to help combat cheating by expediting the decision making process for the student.  It is assumed that some foundation of knowledge would be required (i.e. completed assignments and reading) to score well on a timed examination.  …

In an effort to reach more students and link them with basic skill sets that will transfer into the workplace the Obama administration is drafting the framework on a program that would offer online classes to both high school and community college students for free!  The courses, owned by the government, would be free for anyone to take with the school(s) receiving federal funding.

Community colleges and high schools would receive up to %50 million a year to create free, online courses in a program being drafted by the Obama administration.
The program would help community colleges provide more skills training and education to those leaving high school without a diploma and those who have no college education. In addition to free online courses, the program would provide $9 billion over ten years to help community colleges develop better job training programs, and a $10 billion loan fund for facility improvements.

According to the Fiscal 2009 Third Quarter Report filed by Apollo Group, Inc. yesterday, University of Phoenix just hit total degreed enrollment of 420,700, up 22% compared to last year. These numbers are well above but reflective of strong overall growth in online education enrollment.
According to the report, enrollment growth was driven largely by continuing increases in enrollments and improved student retention at University of Phoenix. In fact according to the college review site www.collegegrader.com 88% of reviews said they would attend University of Phoenix if they could start over.
