5 Reasons Traditional Learning is Outdated

5 Reasons Traditional Learning is OutdatedMany students are reluctant to dip their feet into the world of online education. They believe they won’t learn as much as in a traditional classroom setting. However, the reality is that many learn far more outside of that 48×40 room.

Let’s explore 5 reasons traditional education is outdated.

The Desk-chair: Some things work well together. Peanut butter and jelly, universal remotes, and bear helmets leap to mind. Desk-chairs, however, fall out of my top million list of best combo inventions. Those wretched chairs are uncomfortable at best, and not conducive to learning at all. As we get older our bodies understandably change. Some suffer from a particular ailment, some have a thyroid condition which has contributed to obesity, others are skyscraper tall. Regardless, it’s just hard to focus when you’re uncomfortable. One desk-chair does not fit all!

You’re already online: Many lectures today are straight from power point presentations. The professor just clicks on the presentation and basically reads exactly what it says. The presentation is made available to students online as well. The only difference between taking this class online opposed to in a traditional setting is that the professor may add a couple of real world stories to compliment the slides, something he could do quite easily online too - big whoop!

Nutty Professor:  Do they lock the door at the top of the hour not allowing you to enter the class if you’re running late? Do they enforce the no food policy? Are their tests unreasonable? Many students visit those rate your professor sites and coordinate their efforts to avoid certain instructors, even at the risk of messing up their entire schedule. That is just ludicrous. The only nuts I want when I’m learning are made by Planters. I especially love their honey roasted cashews.

Fellow Students: Maybe I’m just getting old but people really get on my nerves.  I understand that everyone is at different learning levels, but some students just talk to hear themselves speak. And then there are those students who just love to be confrontational with the professor.  It gives me a headache. These people just make me want to cringe.

Set Time: Your class is at a set time on a particular day(s). Don’t feel well? Too bad. Having car problems? Call someone who cares. Some instructors even penalize for you being absent.  Have fun parking in left field and walking your sickly self to class. With any luck you’ll have a few choice sneezes and infect your nutty professor.

But if you still want to go the traditional route, so be it. While your sitting at your desk-chair listening to a boring power point presentaion by your nutty professor, I’ll be on my recliner eating some honey roasted cashews and exercising my mind during commercials of the Red Sox game, where the only thing outdated is my television.

So true! The prevalence of booming online schools is also one proof that traditional learning style is becoming more outdated.

No one is saying that Laboratory time and hands on technical experience can be replaced completely with Online Classes.

Some of the comments here are so ignorant, others hit the mark.

Everyone is different. Yes, social skills are important and learned in school… but they are not THE most important things about school. If it were, then people with disabilities would never be able to learn because of isolation, and we know this isnt true.

In fact, almost anyone can learn if they are given tools that aid them. Genius is learned, not genetic. This is why we oppress the poor and make educational materials so expensive… its a way to kill minorities who happen to be poor. Evil.

We wont need doctors if the entire planet explodes because we have no mathamaticians or engineers… what good is a hospital without people to care for in the first place.

Agree with Susana It is technology matters!

  4. Betty says on December 28, 2009 at 8:38 pm:

My favorite classrooms had padded chairs on wheels in front of tables – 4 could sit at each table but was better with just 3 students.
All people are different that’s why we need to adjust our own thinking rather than cutting down others!
Listening to others can help others understand what others think as well as possibly enhancing your own knowledge – if you are willing to learn.
Set class times – needed especially for those who wouldn’t come to clas otherwise (even though some don’t anyway). If a student does not want set class times then they should take online courses.
Also set class times can also prepare students for the real world when they begin working for companies that have set work times!!!!!

i can relate to this. After going to a bigger high school the same types of things happen here too. Being away at school will probably make it even harder to get someone to care.

  15. Jordan says on December 10, 2009 at 1:37 pm:

I disagree. UCF has online classes and these online classes are videos of the recorded class that can be played over and over again if you didnt get some thing the first time. I believe that online classes are being more taken advantage of now than ever.

  16. kentiara says on December 8, 2009 at 11:42 pm:

  20. yadira says on December 2, 2009 at 12:56 pm:

i actually like the information on here because it makes me think that maybe online college is better than actual college.

  21. rachel says on November 28, 2009 at 3:00 am:

How many of you would want a doctor or nurse taking care of you who learned online???? Can you listen to a heart, start an IV, learn interview skills online??? absolutely NO WAY. I am going into the medical field and can’t wait to be surrounded by other people and knowledgeable professors during my entire college experience.

    i agree 100%

  28. Lauren says on November 14, 2009 at 3:37 pm:

Ive taken an online course and it was terrible. I’m a procrastinator and it was really hard submitting everything at the right time so I ended up doing hours of homework a lot. It depends what kind of person you are and if you can finish the deadline on your free time.

  29. afua says on November 13, 2009 at 10:45 pm:

I love traditional learning it exposes you to real life and even strengthens you.

  30. Emma says on November 13, 2009 at 4:31 pm:

I see how this article holds truth however, I prefer a classroom setting than online learning. To each is own.

  31. Matt says on November 11, 2009 at 6:13 pm:

Good article, but it’s on the edge of agreement. Traditional learning has been proven, and I feel that real life, physical materials help people remember what they’ve learned, and further analyze it.

  32. Natasha says on November 8, 2009 at 3:50 pm:

I agree and disagree with this blog. I think we should take classes online because it will help us more but we also need hands on training and some classes cant be taken on a computer.

  33. Lakera says on November 6, 2009 at 5:53 pm:

sad to say but not every teacher is nutty an sometimes the nutty teachers are the ones that actually pushes u a step further. And if u lokk beyond their “nuttiness” its something that actually motivates u,the desks and chair setting might be old fashioned and out dated in a sense but having more than one or two usually helps. Being in a Classroom setting and being able to learn not jus from these nutty professors we also learn from or classmates!

  34. Sabrina says on November 5, 2009 at 10:00 am:

Not every class can be taken online. I am a photography major and none of my work can be done just online. So, this is a very deceiving article, and I actually love the traditional way of learning.

  35. Max says on November 5, 2009 at 9:11 am:

    100% true!!

  36. Chia says on November 4, 2009 at 11:00 am:

I believe it’s all up to you to do well in any kind of setting or teaching style. If you are determine to learn and succeed then you will be but, if you just get annoyed about a little problem about this and that of course you’ll say you can’t learn it that way. It’s just like you have to take a class that is require for you to graduate and it is only offer on an online class, even if you don’t like online classes you have to take it in order to graduate. Everything has it’s pros and cons, that’s how life is you gotta just find a solution even if it doesn’t go as you planned.
