Bill Gates Praises Online Education

87550896In his recent 2010 annual letter, Bill Gates sang high praises for online education.”A lot of people, including me, think this is the next place where the internet will surprise people in how it can improve things,” he wrote. Gates believes that online education could completely change the educational experience for students. He said that thus far technology has hardly changed education at all and that online learning should be more than just lectures. He thinks that it should use lessons tailored to the individual student’s learning needs.

Other education experts agree with him on this point. Michael Horn, the executive director of education for Innosight Institute says, “What I think we want to use online learning to do is escape the traditional factory model that treats every student the same way on the same day.”

There are definite signs that online education is heading in this direction. A recent survey on online education suggests that over 4.6 million college students, or one in four, were taking an online course at the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year. This is a 17 percent jump from 2007. The survey also found that 73 percent of colleges and universities reported that demand for existing online classes increased and 66 percent said that demand for new online classes increased.

It is said that in total the number of online degree programs increased by 75 percent between 2001 and 2008. Online classes becoming more and more popular with full-time undergraduate students, part-time graduate students and working professionals. Online education, in all its versatility, is going nowhere but up.

Nice post. Yes, you are right. The next big thing is online education and interactive education. People now a days are interested in fast and short learning modules, which is more of a learn and apply mode.

The scenario of education is fast changing.

I have read some recent stats that in the next 5 years 22 million students will be taking some form of online learning. Online learning is becoming a more acceptable format. As people become busier and more tech savvy, online has become a popular and effective option. In the courses I teach, there is a great diversity of students as well which has lead to much more interesting conversations in the classroom.
