This sub-headline from the recent U.S. News blog post, Online Education May Change Higher Ed., sheds light on the growing maturity in online education programs.
The article asks experts, “Can online education be the rock that disturbs the placid waters of American higher education?” Interestingly it seems the feedback is both positive and negative to the increased enrollment at top online schools such as Kaplan University and the University of Phoenix. One expert, Louis Soares, director of postsecondary education at the Center for American Progress, says: “Much in the way cell phones disrupted the traditional landline-based model or discount retailers like Wal-Mart revolutionized the nation’s retail market, the for-profit sector—though a subject of intense scrutiny in recent years—has driven changes that could greatly affect the world of higher education.”

For students interested in child development, Rasmussen College offers a couple of great associate’s degree programs online, and it is a great time to start studying. It’s projected that there will be 86,700 new jobs for teachers in this field in the coming years. Not that a degree guarantees employment in this field, or any field for that matter, but education is the best place to start.

The U.S. Education Department’s schedule for implementing proposed regulations on for-profit schools is not final, according to a media report that caused share prices in the sector to rise.”We are keeping our options open,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan was quoted as saying when asked about a possible delay in finalizing the regulations. His comments appeared in a blog run by Washington publication The Hill. The remark pushed up share prices for the schools, which have been volatile on news that the Education Department may declare some programs ineligible for financial aid.

Mr. Hynn, a professor at Hanyang Cyber University here, said teaching for an online university takes some getting used to, and he’s still adjusting. For one thing, he rarely cracks jokes in his taped lectures, because such quips seem strange in the vacuum of the studio. And he steers clear of references to current events, since the lectures are reused for the next year or two, and such references can make the video lectures feel dated.
